ORDINARY TO EXTRAORDINARY

The day-to-day can be so mundane. You wake up, shuffle to the bathroom, go to the kitchen for coffee, stand under the shower, get dressed and on and on. Before you know it, you’re back home standing at the bathroom vanity and brushing your teeth before going to bed. The thing is time passes with or without you noticing or enjoying it. Years can pass and you won’t remember much except a blur of routine.

Try the practice of sensory immersion. Through sensory immersion you engage all your senses to embrace the richness of each activity. It is as simple as doing one thing at a time. When you brush your teeth, feel the weight of the brush in your hand. Smell the mint from the toothpaste. Hear the bristles as they clean your teeth. Taste the toothpaste and feel the tingle of it on your tongue. Get the idea? By infusing these routines with awareness, you start your day with a sense of grounding and engagement.

Another technique involves mindful transitions. Imagine a series of moments throughout the day when you consciously shift from one activity to another. Before making the shift to the new task, take a few deep breaths and bringing your full attention to the present moment. With mindful transitions, you prevent the rush of routine from obscuring your awareness and you approach each new task with a fresh perspective.
